IDENTITY IN LANDSCAPE - COLLAGE WORKSHOP

IOW NATIONAL LANDSCAPES COMMISSION 2024/25

Following Dimbola Curator Kelly’s walk exploring sensory experience in Freshwater and the creative history of the area, we ran a photographic collage session that also explored the idea of layers of time and history in a single creative outcome. We asked participants to explore their place in this moment, the impact they have and the connections to the people and creatives that have existed in this space before them.

We’d asked participants to use materials and images they collected during this walk, as well as historical items and content we provided to create collages depicting the landscape and how they shape it, with consideration of past inhabitants and creatives.

After an introduction that consolidated the concept and some artist influences, including Robert Smithson, Richard Long, Noemie Goudal and George Dyer, we directed participants to complete two practise A4 collages exploring texture then colour. For the second half of the session participants then created a self directed A3 collage as a ‘final piece’, with a focus on Tennyson’s down and the bay.

We brought a printer and a scanner, allowing participants to email images over and scan in collected items for us to print / photocopy. Participants used a wide range of techniques including re-scanning, tearing, writing and drawing to create thoughtful and finished collages which successfully explored the landscape and our impact on it.
